3.5 — Motor Installation & Commissioning

A correctly installed and commissioned motor starts reliably, runs within nameplate ratings, and operates without tripping or unusual noise. This lesson covers pre-installation checks, electrical connection requirements, and the step-by-step commissioning procedure from first start to documentation.

3.5.1 — Pre-Installation Checks

Before mounting a motor, verify that it is the correct unit for the application and that the installation site is ready. Problems discovered at this stage are far easier to correct than those found after wiring and commissioning.

Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Verify motor specifications match application requirements — HP/kW, voltage, phase, speed, enclosure type
  • Inspect motor for shipping damage before installation
  • Check shaft rotation freedom — should turn smoothly by hand with no grinding, binding, or rough spots
  • Verify voltage supply matches motor nameplate rating
  • Ensure adequate clearance for ventilation and future service access
  • Confirm mounting dimensions match available space and mounting pattern

Check shaft rotation before mounting

A motor with rough or stiff shaft rotation has a bearing problem that will worsen under load. Identifying this before installation prevents removal and remounting after the fact. Rotate the shaft by hand at least two full turns in each direction.

3.5.2 — Electrical Connections

All motor wiring must comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC), the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and any applicable local codes. Improper wiring is a common source of motor damage and creates shock and fire hazards.

Wiring Requirements

  • Size conductors for a minimum of 125% of motor FLA per code requirements
  • Install appropriate overcurrent protection (fuses or circuit breaker) for the branch circuit
  • Provide proper motor overload protection — sized to motor nameplate FLA
  • Ensure secure, tight connections at the motor terminal box — loose connections cause overheating and arcing
  • Verify proper grounding of motor frame to equipment ground
  • Connect motor leads according to wiring diagram for correct voltage tap and rotation direction
  • Use wire connectors and lugs rated for the application voltage, current, and conductor type
  • Seal all conduit entries at the motor terminal box to prevent moisture infiltration

Verify rotation before connecting driven equipment

Connect the motor and briefly jog it before coupling to the driven equipment. Verify correct rotation direction. Reversing rotation after full coupling can damage pumps, fans, compressors, and belts — and the correction requires full disconnection and rewiring.

3.5.3 — Commissioning Procedures

Commissioning is the structured process of verifying that a newly installed motor and its associated equipment operate correctly before the system is handed over for service. Follow the four stages in sequence — do not proceed to the next stage if problems are found.

Pre-Start Checks

  • Verify all guards, covers, and access panels are in place and secured
  • Confirm driven equipment is free to rotate — no blockages or obstructions
  • Ensure motor and driven equipment have proper lubrication
  • Verify belt tension and sheave alignment on belt-drive applications
  • Check coupling alignment on direct-drive applications

Initial Start

  • Clear area of personnel and obstacles before energizing
  • Start motor briefly and immediately verify correct rotation direction
  • Listen for unusual noises — grinding, rubbing, or excessive magnetic hum
  • Observe for abnormal vibration during run-up and at operating speed
  • Shut down immediately if any problems are detected — investigate before restarting

Running Tests

  • Measure and record operating current on all phases under load
  • Measure and record supply voltage under operating load conditions
  • Verify measured current is within motor nameplate FLA rating
  • Check for proper operation of all controls and safety devices
  • Verify overload relay settings match motor nameplate FLA
  • Monitor motor temperature after 30–60 minutes of continuous operation

Documentation

  • Record all motor nameplate data — HP, FLA, voltage, RPM, insulation class, service factor
  • Document installation date and installing technician’s name
  • Record baseline operating parameters — measured voltage, current on each phase, and speed
  • Create a maintenance schedule based on manufacturer recommendations and operating conditions
  • File all documentation (nameplate data, wiring diagrams, commissioning records) for future reference
Commissioning success criteria

A properly commissioned motor operates smoothly with minimal vibration and noise, draws current within nameplate ratings on all phases, maintains acceptable operating temperature, and performs its intended function without overload tripping or abnormal behavior. Any deviation from these criteria must be investigated and corrected before the installation is accepted as complete.
